There's many posts and tips out there about self-care, but not everyone looks at it in the same way. Here's some tips that I have compiled, based on my experience as a psychologist, sitting with clients and this topic on a regular basis:
Don’t say “Yes” when you mean “No”. Practice this.
Solitude and silence can positively contribute to mental resiliency. They can be seen as powerful tools to ground/center your thoughts.
While exercise has been proven to treat depressive episodes and is acknowledged as a protective factor, it’s not your only healthy coping mechanism. Naps are also the best. Rest is the best!
Spa treatments, hikes, hobbies etc. are fun and relaxing, but you can also confidently ask your therapist for low budget self-care tips.
Breakfast doesn’t always kickstart your day, sometimes it’s your lunchtime.
You don’t lose anything by being communicative or vulnerable, you may not receive a response from your loved ones but that’s not entirely in your control.
The harsh/critical words we receive from people we love, is it always about us? Is it really who we are? Take a step back, think about it first.
Internalised negative thoughts breed contempt. Breathe. Remember your worth.
Meditation for 15-20 minutes may be challenging, try 5 minutes first! The path to healing is really not linear.
Some people love gifts, some people love quality time, some people love it when you send them memes.
Take comfort in your discomfort. Yes, this is a difficult emotion but this is an opportunity to learn to sit with any difficulties, then……………. grow.
My favourite question to ask clients is “What do you believe about power? " and "What do you believe about your own personal power?”
We are all different and embracing these differences is a healthy stepping stone for improving our well-being. Breathe. You’re doing fine.
